What is the token digital certificate and how to use it?
The token electronic signature and digital certificate use a hardware device - a token - on which the digital certificate and the keys required for signing are stored. This token connects to the computer via a USB port.
How to use it
- Connect the token to a computer.
- Open the signing application or a document that requires digital signing.
- Select the digital signing option.
- Enter the PIN code to authorise the signature.
To use the token, you will have to install the appropriate drivers.
Advantages and disadvantages of using a token for the digital signature
Advantages
- Physical control: The user has physical control over the token, which can be preferred by those who wish to directly manage the security of their signature.
- Compatibility: It can be used on any computer with a USB port.
Considerations
- Dependence on hardware: Losing or damaging the token can cause major problems and requires the certificates to be reissued. The token and the pertaining software application has limited support.
- Price: The price of a token-based digital certificate is higher than the price of a cloud digital certificate.
When should you opt for a token signature?
The token signature is ideal when you need a high level of security and physical control of your digital certificate.
Here are some situations where we recommend you opt for a token digital signature:
You frequently work with sensitive or confidential documents
You prefer having physical control of your digital certificates
You sign documents on multiple computers
In some fields (legal, pharmaceutics, accounting), regulations may require use of a digital signature on a hardware device to comply with audit and security standards.
